The student theatre »Ivan Goran Kovačić« has been operating as a part of the cultural club of the same name since 1948. This is the oldest section of the club, and continued the drama activity of students of the Zagreb University.

This theatre is a gathering place for young people with real understanding, interest and love for the theatre who want to check and increase their knowledge both practically and theoretically. The main qualities of the group are the enthusiasm, freshness and a constant wish for exploring and finding new ways. In over fifty years of its existence the theatre has produced at least one play per year, trying to present well-known or less known texts in a new way.

Its activity has earned it many awards in the ex-Yugoslavia and abroad at various tours. In the nineties, the Theatre has started living a new life. There is a new group of actors and associates who have been working together for several years now.

Croatian drama writer Tanja Radovic has gathered actors who have excellently interpreted her dramatic texts and have put the Theatre at the very top of the Croatian amateur theatres. The performances have always been enthusiastically received by the audience, have received excellent reviews respectively and have regularly been selected among the best of Croatian drama amateurs. The play "Time sharing" by the author Tanja Radovic was declared the best play in 1999 at the Festival of Croatian drama amateurs.

In 2001 the Theatre goes beyond the drama text and in the search for freshness and new scenic expression moves towards experimenting and researching of new theatrical forms. The experiments are with physical theatre, sound, theatre of shadows but with emphasized acting approach. It attempts to create a new experience for the audience using multimedia scene in interaction with the actor. It also attempts to convey all emotional states, an inside stories of the actors and the overall message respectively as well. Expression of the actors is equally good in physical as well as in the spoken theatre. Such performances are the chore dramas"Killers or the Story about us" , "Burning head" and "Centre of the circle" by the author and theatre member Biljana Geratovic. The play "Killers or the Story about us" was a guest performance at many festivals in Croatia and abroad.

So far, it is the most performed play by the group. The theatre takes special pride in the talent, energy and inspiration of its actors who in some plays change and perform several different characters (Time Sharing, Trapped in the Drawing, Burning head, Heart-snatcher). The strong cast has earned numerous praises by the critics and the audience. Significant success of the group was recording of radio-drama "Trapped in the Drawing, for the National radio, which is definitely a great step in doing away with the prejudices about “amateur” actors. The group still has not its own stage so the first touch with it is on the day of a performance.

It is the reason why the Theatre usually performs on tours and takes part in festival events. At the present it is the only way for the plays to be played after more than just a few performances. So far the group has performed in Croatia (Zagreb, Rovigno, Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar etc.) and abroad (Slovenia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Austria, Hungary, South Korea, Tunisia, Iran). The aim of the Theatre is to constantly extend its work beyond the borders of Croatia, to take part in international festivals and exchange experiences with other participants and fans of experimental and alternative theatre.
